Addressing the Sustainability Problems in Boyle Heights
Smart Growth and Urban Sprawl Report
Within the class, three presentations and a full report were introduced on the sustainability problems in Boyle Heights, a neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. The final report identified that the issues in the community were related to the lack of connectivity, park space and greenery, and affordable housing; data was used to support the problems stated. Three solutions were described - a physical infrastructure change (Park Capping The Freeway), street vendor space creation, and the beautification of freeway spaces using art and greenery. Furthermore, three goals and several policies were implemented in the project to efficiently integrate the freeway space into the community so it could be less of a burden on the surrounding area.
